The publisher of That’s Mathematics, Mama Makes Books, describes itself as making books with love and that factor is certainly true of this book. Our reviewer opened it expecting yet another run of the mill explanation of calculations, but what a surprise! The presentation is interesting, attractive and designed to appeal to children. Maths is explained in a way which does not feel like education, but rather, feels like having a party with numbers invited. In fact, it looks so inviting that the reviewer’s six-year-old had to be prevented from running off with it before it could be reviewed.
The accompanying book of challenges and activities a little bit more as you would expect from a maths book but still not too ‘schooly’, and it does the job. Both books are aimed at children in the early stages of gaining numeracy and pitched ideally for their target audience.
Would we recommend ‘That’s Mathematics’? We certainly would.
